Did Apple DEMOLISH the accessory game? Are Samsung left behind?
Apple put a ring of magnets in the iPhone 12 in 2020 and the accessory world never went back. MagSafe locked chargers, wallets and mounts in the same spot every time, Qi charging finally had perfect alignment, and an NFC chip told the phone exactly what you had snapped on. You got 15W through the 15 series and up to 25W from the iPhone 16 onward. Cases kept older phones in the game and the same idea later became Qi2.
Only Apple really had it built in for years. HMD’s Skyline added magnets in 2024. Google followed with PixelSnap on the Pixel 10 family — MagSafe accessories just work. Samsung still sits it out, usually blaming the S Pen. A MagSafe case on an S25 Ultra does not kill the pen, and the phones without one (and the folds) would look better without a case if the magnets were already inside. Apple, leaving it off a fold would be a mistake.
Wallets and chargers came first, then car mounts, creator rigs, rings stuck to tiles and mirrors, and a pile of oddities: pouches, water bottles, reference monitors and MagSafe SSDs.
