Apple’s highly anticipated fall event is scheduled for Monday, September 9, where the company is expected to reveal its latest iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models, along with new Apple Watch versions. While other new products might also be introduced, several rumored devices are unlikely to be unveiled at this event. Instead, they may be announced later this year or in 2025 and beyond.
M4-Powered Macs
Apple is currently developing new Macs that will be powered by its next-generation M4 chip, which is based on TSMC’s advanced second-generation 3nm technology. This chip promises substantial improvements in performance and power efficiency compared to the M3 chip found in recent Mac models.
The first M4-powered Macs are expected to debut later this year. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is planning to refresh the MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac with M4 chips, with an announcement likely in October and a potential launch in November. Developer logs indicate that Apple has been testing four machines with base-level M4 chips. Three of these Macs feature a 10-core CPU and a 10-core GPU, while the fourth has an 8-core CPU and an 8-core GPU—a configuration not previously seen in the M4 lineup. These Macs are expected to offer 16GB or 32GB of Unified Memory.
Meanwhile, Apple’s supply chain is reportedly beginning mass production of next-generation 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models equipped with M4 Pro and M4 Max chips. If Apple follows last year’s release pattern, these devices could be available in about two months.
iPhone SE 4
Following the iPhone 16 launch in September, Apple is expected to release the fourth-generation iPhone SE as early as the beginning of 2025, according to Mark Gurman. This new iPhone SE is rumored to adopt a design similar to the iPhone 14, featuring Face ID, a USB-C port, an Action button, an Apple-designed 5G modem, an A18 processor, and a full-screen design that eliminates the Home Button.
The display is anticipated to increase in size from 4.7 inches to 6.06 inches, utilizing OLED technology for the first time in this model. The device will likely come with 8GB of RAM, up from 4GB in the 2022 version, to meet the hardware demands of Apple Intelligence. The iPhone SE 4 might be released in time for the Lunar New Year in January 2025, though a March 2025 release, consistent with previous SE launches, is also possible.
HomePod mini 2
The HomePod mini, which turns four years old in October, is reportedly due for an update. Mark Gurman first mentioned Apple’s work on a second-generation HomePod mini in August 2022 but questioned what new features it could offer since the latest HomePod doesn’t include any major functions absent in the $99 mini.
In February 2023, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that Apple would begin mass production of the second-generation HomePod mini in the second half of 2024. However, since this prediction was made some time ago, its accuracy is uncertain, and there have been few subsequent rumors about the device. Nonetheless, it’s reasonable to expect improved sound quality, better microphones, an updated S-series chip, and new color options in a new model. If Apple aims to compete with Amazon’s rumored Claude AI-powered Echo devices, Apple Intelligence could also be a feature of the next-generation HomePod mini.
Apple recently replaced the Space Gray finish with a similar Midnight option, which suggests that a new model is unlikely to be announced soon, especially not at the upcoming iPhone 16 event.
AirPods Pro 3
Apple is anticipated to introduce a redesigned version of the AirPods Pro in 2025, according to Mark Gurman. The next iteration is expected to offer enhanced audio quality, a new design, and a faster chip.
The updated AirPods Pro may also include a hearing test feature to detect potential hearing issues. New health sensors under development could enable functions like temperature readings from the ear canal and improvements to existing features such as Conversation Boost and Live Listen. Additionally, the next-generation AirPods Pro are rumored to feature significantly enhanced Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), though specific details on these improvements are not yet available.
New Apple TV
Apple is reportedly working on a new Apple TV with a faster processor, retaining the design of the current model. While Mark Gurman initially suggested a 2024 release, he later indicated that the update might not be imminent, leaving the timeline uncertain.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo speculates that the next-generation Apple TV could be more affordable, potentially continuing Apple’s trend of reducing the device’s price. A future version of the Apple TV might also include a built-in camera for FaceTime and other video calling apps, further expanding on the FaceTime capabilities introduced in tvOS 17
