Windows 11 Runs on M1 Mac! (Virtual Machine Tutorial Proof of Concept using UTM QEMU)

This is a quick proof of concept experiment to see how Windows 11 x86_64 would run on M1 macOS under a virtual machine, which you can tell is extremely slow. If you can figure out a way to make this virtual machine run faster please leave a comment! I also experimented with bare QEMU 6.0.0 but had issues installing to the qcow2 which showed up as 0 bytes – if anyone can figure out how to improve performance I’d be really interested!

For much better performance, run Windows 10 ARM on Parallels:

I recorded this on my MacBook Air M1 2020 with 8 GB of RAM and 8 GPU cores.
