The headphones that came with the original iPod couldn’t adjust the volume. There was no button or slider anywhere on the cable. If you wanted it louder, you had to pull the iPod out of your pocket and spin a scroll wheel. There was no microphone either. But that mattered less in 2001, since the iPod couldn’t make calls. And there was definitely no active noise cancellation, so the only thing standing between you and the sound of traffic was a black foam covering that Apple included in the box.

Today, Apple sells headphones that measure your heart rate, translate a conversation in real time, and function as a hearing aid. The evolution between those two products is one of the most interesting in Apple’s history, because for the first fifteen years of it, Apple’s headphone business didn’t appear in a single financial document. While today, it’s a category that out-earns entire most fortune 500 companies.
