M5 MacBook Air review – Apple’s unexpected monster

Fast forward to today, and with the new entry-level MacBook Neo taking over basic portable duties, the 15-inch M5 MacBook Air has quietly evolved into a true “mid-tier monster” that rivals the MacBook Pro. In this review, we skip synthetic benchmark charts to focus on real-world performance, Apple hardware evolution, and why the M5 Air is worth its higher price tag. We look at key design refinements like new keycap glyphs, long-overdue 512GB standard base storage, faster SSD read/write speeds for memory swap, and subtle under-the-hood upgrades like Apple’s custom N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. I also share how I use a maxed-out 32GB model as an “external brain” to handle chaotic ADHD multitasking—running dozens of Safari tabs, Notion, Obsidian, and Notability all at once without lag—along with fanless creative performance, media consumption, and casual gaming like Java Minecraft.
